Thrifty Ray splurged. I splurge, too. Do you?

March 31st, 2008 at 01:03 am

Thrifty Ray got me thinking about what I splurge on. She recently got a great haircut and color and it made her feel really good. We all supported her and said being frugal means we save for the things we want.

I am a naturally frugal person. I spend very little money in general and look for ways to save money on the things I must buy.

However, this doesn't mean I don't spend money. I do! I get two 30 minute massages a week at work($50/week) and have now hired a personal trainer ($70/week). I also splurge on art. I buy art almost every time I travel - my walls are now a story of the travels I have taken. I also do save and spend a fair amount on travel.

I think it's important to know what you want and to save for it. Ima & her DH spend their money on cars. What do you spend your hard earned money on?

Well, because I'm rather new to budgeting, I haven't decided what to spend my "fun" money on. I have had this all out ridiculous lack of care in my choice of spending that I have begun to just say no to everything. I'm going to sit back for awhile and plan that out. But yes, we all definitely need a little wiggle room to enjoy what we work so hard to earn!

I like for my hair to be done and I go once a week. That is my treat to myself. In addition, I splurge on clothing because as long as I look nice I feel great. But some time I can go overboard, even though I only buy items that are on sale and not more than $20 I can still go over so I have to watch my spending on clothing

I get my nails done every 3-4 weeks. The ideal time frame for me is 3 weeks, but if there are extenuating circumstances I can let it go to 4. I also have my hair highlighted, but I can go months in-between. I do budget for both of these things, because I've gotta have them! I think we all need to have things we splurge on from time to time!! Smile

My big splurge this past year has been on my personal trainer. Other than that, I like to spluge once or twice a year on tickets for myself and a friend to go to a music concert or a play.

My name in lights (or at least in the title of someones blog)...I feel celebrity-like... Big Grin
I think back over the past couple of years and my splurges would have to be helping my kids...Buying homes, starting businesses, babies, etc... I know thats where most of our extra income has gone. We have ate out more since I returned to work...and I do have a glass or two of wine each night, which adds up.

I dont buy alot of clothes or makeup, I dont buy 'things' for the house and I am pretty good about buying things I need on sale or clearance in advance so that Im not paying full price when I "need" it.

Of course, now I am rethinking my need for a routine haircut...lol Big Grin Thanks for the mention!

I get my hair cut and highlighted. I buy books and when traveling, I like to buy local pottery. And...an occasional trip to the bakery!

I eat out almost everynight. Our dining out bill is usually under $20 but I don't have to cook!! (and clean up) It is like a date night everynight for us!!

We each get $60 per week spending money and, if I haven't piddled it away and have extra in my sock drawer, I'll impulsively order delivery or takeout for all of us, some day when we're all tired and want to feel indulged. (We have weekly menus that we plan and cook religiously, so this is a big frivolity for us.) AS saved up and got her dreadlocks retied (helps them keep their shape). NT saved up and got a tattoo.

I "plan" our other splurges. I put a little away whenever I can into a savings account, and allocate percentages to different categories of fun. When we have enough to guy something we want, we spend it. Right now it's 30% for travel, 30% for b-day/Xmas gifts, and 30% for home improvement. (The other 10% is for healthcare; fun because it can keep us from having to use our weekly spending money when we have copays!)

Out to eat for me. While I cook from scratch at home, I still love to eat out and order in.

I spend my hard earned money on gas and groceries.
I have gone about one week a month not having to shop for food. I have two growing boys and a grown man at home to help with the food bill.
That and gas are by far my biggest splurges in earned money.
